Week 16
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 16 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 16 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 16 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of an avocado — about 11.6cm.
What's happening
Baby's heart is pumping around 25 liters of blood a day already. Muscles are strengthening, and baby may be able to make small facial expressions. Some women start feeling the first faint flutters ('quickening') around now.
Your body
Your center of gravity is beginning to shift, which can affect balance.
Common symptoms
- Possible first flutters
- Backache
- Stretch marks may begin
- Nasal congestion
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain
- Fever above 38°C
If no anatomy scan is scheduled yet, ask your doctor — the detailed 18–22 week scan is important for checking baby's development.
