Week 23

Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist

Welcome to week 23 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 23 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 23 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.

Baby's size

The size of a large mango / grapefruit — about 28.9cm.

What's happening

Baby's face is fully formed, and blood vessels in the lungs are developing to prepare for breathing after birth. Baby can now hear your voice, heartbeat, and digestive sounds clearly.

Your body

You may notice more visible veins as blood volume continues increasing.

Common symptoms

  • Strong movement
  • Swelling in feet/ankles
  • Backache
  • Occasional Braxton Hicks
When to call your doctor
  • Regular painful contractions
  • Sudden severe swelling with headache (possible pre-eclampsia warning sign)
  • Reduced fetal movement
Dr. Humaira's tip

This is a good week to ask your doctor about the glucose screening test for gestational diabetes, usually done between weeks 24–28.
