Second Trimester

Week 17

Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist

Welcome to week 17 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 17 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 17 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.

Baby's size

The size of a turnip / pear — about 13cm.

What's happening

Baby's skeleton is hardening from cartilage into bone. Fat stores are beginning to develop under the skin, and the umbilical cord is thickening and strengthening.

Your body

Your ligaments are stretching to support your growing uterus, which can cause sharp, brief 'round ligament pain' on one or both sides.

Common symptoms

  • Round ligament pain
  • Backache
  • Stuffy nose
  • Increasing appetite
When to call your doctor
  • Round ligament pain is normally brief and sharp — pain that is severe, constant, or with fever needs prompt medical review
Dr. Humaira's tip

Round ligament pain is very common and usually harmless — it tends to happen with sudden movement (standing up fast, coughing). Moving slowly and supporting your belly when you shift position helps.
