Second Trimester

Week 18

Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist

Welcome to week 18 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 18 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 18 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.

Baby's size

The size of a bell pepper — about 14.2cm.

What's happening

Baby's ears are now in their final position, and hearing is developing — baby may start responding to loud sounds. If you're having a detailed anatomy scan, this is often around when it's scheduled (weeks 18–22).

Your body

Most women are noticeably showing by now. You may feel more consistent baby movement.

Common symptoms

  • More noticeable movement
  • Backache
  • Mild swelling in feet/ankles by end of day
  • Vivid dreams (common, harmless)
When to call your doctor
  • Sudden or severe swelling of face/hands
  • Severe headache with vision changes
  • Reduced fetal movement once you've established a regular pattern
Dr. Humaira's tip

Talking or playing music near your belly from now on is a lovely bonding habit — baby's hearing is developing and can start recognizing familiar sounds.
