Second Trimester

Week 19

Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist

Welcome to week 19 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 19 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 19 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.

Baby's size

The size of a mango — about 15.3cm.

What's happening

A protective waxy coating (vernix caseosa) starts covering baby's skin. Baby's kidneys are producing urine, and sensory development in the brain (smell, taste, hearing, sight, touch) is accelerating.

Your body

You may notice a dark line down your belly (linea nigra) or darkening skin patches — both are common pigmentation changes from hormones.

Common symptoms

  • Regular fetal movement
  • Skin pigmentation changes
  • Backache
  • Leg cramps
When to call your doctor
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Signs of preterm labor (regular tightening/contractions this early)
Dr. Humaira's tip

Skin pigmentation changes (linea nigra, melasma) are extremely common and fade significantly after delivery — they're not something to worry about.
