Second Trimester

Week 20

Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist

Welcome to week 20 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 20 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 20 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.

Baby's size

About 16.4cm, roughly the length of a banana — the halfway point!

What's happening

This is your anatomy scan week for many pregnancies — a detailed ultrasound checking baby's organs, growth, and (if you choose to know) sex. Baby is swallowing more amniotic fluid, which helps the digestive system develop.

Your body

Your uterus has now reached the level of your belly button. You've made it to the halfway mark.

Common symptoms

  • Strong, regular movement
  • Backache
  • Possible mild shortness of breath as the uterus expands
  • Stretch marks may start appearing
When to call your doctor
  • Reduced fetal movement after this point should always be checked
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain
Dr. Humaira's tip

Halfway there — if you're having the anatomy scan this week, write down your questions beforehand so you don't forget them in the moment.
