Week 22
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 22 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 22 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 22 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of a spaghetti squash / papaya — about 27.8cm.
What's happening
Baby's lips, eyebrows, and eyelids are more distinct. The pancreas is developing steadily, and baby's sense of touch is refining — you may notice movement in response to touch on your belly.
Your body
Your belly button may start to protrude as your uterus continues expanding.
Common symptoms
- Strong movement
- Backache
- Swelling in feet (mild, end-of-day)
- Braxton Hicks (mild, irregular practice contractions) may begin
- Regular, painful contractions before 37 weeks
- Reduced fetal movement
- Sudden significant swelling
Mild, irregular Braxton Hicks contractions are your uterus 'practicing' — they're usually painless or mildly uncomfortable and go away with rest or position changes. Regular, painful ones this early need medical review.
