Week 27
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 27 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 27 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 27 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of a head of cauliflower — about 36.6cm. Marks the end of the second trimester for many.
What's happening
Baby's brain is developing rapidly, and baby can now open and close eyes, and may even hiccup (which you might feel as small rhythmic movements). Lungs, though not fully mature, are capable of breathing with medical support if baby were born now.
Your body
You're approaching the third trimester — fatigue may start returning as your body works harder to support the pregnancy.
Common symptoms
- Strong movement, including hiccups
- Backache
- Shortness of breath with exertion
- Trouble sleeping
- Reduced fetal movement
- Regular contractions before 37 weeks
- Severe swelling or headache
Rhythmic little jerky movements are usually baby hiccups, not a cause for concern — they're actually a good sign of an active, developing nervous system.
