Week 38
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 38 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 38 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 38 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of a leek / large pumpkin — about 49.8cm.
What's happening
Baby continues fine-tuning reflexes like grasping and sucking. Vernix and lanugo (fine body hair) are mostly shed by now, though some babies are still born with traces of both.
Your body
Your body is preparing for labor even if you don't feel it directly — your cervix may begin softening and thinning.
Common symptoms
- Strong pelvic pressure
- More frequent Braxton Hicks
- Trouble sleeping
- Nesting instinct (sudden urge to prepare/clean)
- Regular painful contractions
- Fluid leaking or gushing
- Reduced fetal movement
- Bleeding
It's completely normal to be full-term and still not in labor — only about 5% of babies arrive on their exact due date. Full term is a range, not a deadline.
