Week 39
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 39 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 39 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 39 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of a mini watermelon — about 50.7cm.
What's happening
Baby is considered 'full term' from this week. Final touches on brain and lung development continue. Baby's grip is strong enough to hold on firmly, a reflex that will be obvious right after birth.
Your body
You may be having more frequent check-ins with your doctor to monitor for signs labor is near.
Common symptoms
- Strong pelvic pressure
- Frequent Braxton Hicks
- Difficulty sleeping
- Increased backache
- Waddling gait as ligaments loosen
- Regular contractions increasing in intensity and frequency
- Fluid leaking or gushing
- Reduced fetal movement
- Severe headache or vision changes
Trust your body and your care team here — if you're unsure whether what you're feeling is real labor or Braxton Hicks, it's always reasonable to call and ask rather than guess.
