Week 40
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 40 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 40 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 40 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
About 51.2cm and around 3.4kg on average — full term and ready to meet you.
What's happening
Baby is fully developed and simply continuing to add small amounts of fat and fine-tune reflexes. Your body and baby's are both preparing for labor — hormonal signals between you are triggering the final steps.
Your body
You may feel a mix of anticipation and impatience. Only around 5% of babies arrive exactly on their due date; anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks is considered normal.
Common symptoms
- Strong contractions may begin
- Loss of mucus plug / bloody show
- Water breaking (gush or steady trickle)
- Backache and pelvic pressure
- Regular painful contractions 5 minutes apart for an hour (call your doctor)
- Water breaking (note the time, color, and amount and inform your doctor)
- Reduced fetal movement
- Bright red bleeding
- Severe headache, vision changes, or upper abdominal pain
You're at the finish line. Rest as much as you can, keep your hospital bag by the door, and trust your care team — Dr. Humaira and your midwife are here to guide you through the last steps.
