Week 24
Reviewed by Dr. Humaira Latif, OB-GYN & Ultrasound Specialist
Welcome to week 24 of your pregnancy. Here’s a gentle look at what to expect at 24 weeks pregnant — baby’s size, changes in your body, common 24 weeks pregnant symptoms and a caring tip from Dr. Humaira.
Baby's size
The size of an ear of corn — about 30cm. Often considered the age of 'viability' with intensive medical care if born early.
What's happening
Baby's lungs are developing air sacs, though they're not yet mature. Baby has regular sleep and wake cycles now, and taste buds are forming.
Your body
Your glucose screening test for gestational diabetes is often scheduled around now.
Common symptoms
- Strong regular movement
- Backache
- Leg cramps, especially at night
- Mild swelling
- Regular contractions
- Reduced fetal movement
- Signs of pre-eclampsia: severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, upper abdominal pain
Leg cramps at night are common from around now — gentle calf stretches before bed and staying hydrated often help.
